STARZ's American Gods Premiere Recap - The Bone Orchard
As someone who never read the Neil Gaiman novel, I was incredibly excited to discover the world of American Gods. And boy, this first episode was a treat.
After a gorgeous opening sequence and introductory scene (can anyone do blood more beautifully than Bryan Fuller?), we're introduced to Shadow Moon (Ricky Whittle), an inmate about to be released from prison only to learn he's being released early when his wife, Laura dies. We also briefly meet his cell-mate, Low-Key Lyesmith (Jonathan Tucker). He appears later in a flashback with the advice "Do not piss off those bitches in airports" when Shadow tries, unsuccessfully to change his flight to an earlier date to return home earlier for his wife's funeral.
During his travels home, he meets a mysterious man who offers him a job as private security; a job Shadow eventually takes after "losing" a coin toss to the man, Mr. Wednesday (Ian McShane). Shadow also gets into a fight with a leprechaun who happens to be much taller than him. Pablo Schreiber's Mad Sweeney is the perfect blend of charm and crazy and I really can't wait to see more of him.
Shadow discovers at his wife's funeral, that she was having an affair with his married best friend, Robbie Burton. Both died in the car accident, Laura with Robbie's "cock in her mouth".
After taking the job with Mr. Wednesday, Shadow is captured by Technical Boy, the personification of the Internet. He is attacked by Tech Boy's henchmen in a digital world as the first episode comes to an ends.
Such a brilliant episode that definitely makes me want to delve deeper into this world!
